Street culture has always interested me, and in London the street has produced many creative styles. Starting from the late 1950's with Rock 'n' Roll and Teddy Boys and going through to the early 1960's with the Mods - which was revolutionary working class kids having clothes made specially for them and really caring about their appearance.
On to the late 1960's, which saw the hippie revolution - admittedly born in San Francisco but very popular in London too. This time also saw an explosion of new ideas in art, photography, music and graphics. Also from the street came Punks, Skinheads, New Romantics and Goths. Sadly, I feel that the innovation and creativity of the "street" from London has been lost and now a more "uniformed" dressing exists, the fatigue pants, t-shirts, very baggy jeans worn low on the hips. Although they are all great looks, it is disappointing that many people look the same.
However in Tokyo there are many "uniformed" looks and a real love of fashion not necessarily as original as some of the previous trends from London, but full of energy, interesting co-ordination and seen in abundance on the streets. The photographs taken by Koji are full of energy and spontaneity, and to me sum up the streets of Tokyo today.
