"Nishibiwajima Love Story" from Nishibiwajimacho (March 6th) Last Updated 6/MAR/2005 A long time ago, a very famous and influential man called Fujiwara-no-Moronaga was exiled to this area (Mizuho-ku in Nagoya) for a crime he did not commit. Moronaga was having a very lonly life resigning all hopes, playing his biwa (Japanese lute) as his only comfort. Over time, he became close to a girl and decided to get married with her. However, a messenger was sent to him and told him to return to the capital because his innocence was established. Moronaga gave his biwa to the girl as his remembrance and went back to the capital. The heartbroken girl tried to follow Moronaga but realized it was impossible when she got to the Biwashima River and threw herself into the river and died. The biwa was hold in her arms tightly until the end. The kids from Nishibiwajimacho handcrafted the Japanese lutes with cray and disposable wooden chopsticks, to introduce the old bitter love story. They designed the patterns to draw on the handcrafted biwa bodies. One of the kids draw Morizo and Kikkoro, the mascot characters of the Expo 2005 Aichi Japan. |
