"The Laughing Tengu (long-nosed goblin)" from Toyoyamacho (March 19th) Last Updated 6/MAR/2005 Once upon a time, a tengu lived on the highest cedar tree in the village. The tengu always spooked people passing by bellowing with laughter and laughed at them scared out of their wits. One day, a child came close to the cedar tree. The child was so small that the tengu bursted out laughing, then the child unexpectedly laughed with him. Tengu was surprised and asked to the child "What's so funny?" The child replied, "Your laughing voice is funny." The tengu was stumped. From that point, the tengu has never been seen. The kids from Toyoyamacho handcrafted the tengu masks to introduce the humorous folk tale. They cut out the Japanese paper into the shape of tengu's face, put the eyelashes and mustache on, made the noses very big and attached the straps to put on the ears. They couldn't tell who's who with the masks on. |
